Over a decade we accept a lot of changes as our own which we wouldn’t have found acceptable earlier.
People greatly underestimate how much they will change in the coming 10 years. Yet, they accept a whole lot of changes that has already happened to them in the past 10 years as natural.
If you look back over the last 20 years and examine how much changes you have accepted in your selection of best friend, favourite vacation, favourite music band, definition of success you will be surprised.
Example:
In my college years my favorite singer was Mukesh, his sleepy drawls. Recently, I found a playlist of 20 songs of Mukeshji online and immediately purchased it without a second thought. Believe me, I am yet to complete the full album even once till now. Except for the nostalgia, all the other things I found boring. The long interval of instrument, the slow cadence, even the famous drawl.
20 years back, if someone would have predicted that I may not like Mukesh songs as much as I did in those days, I would have strangled him. But today it’s the fact.
… …
Time is a powerful force. It transforms our personality, reshapes our values, alters our preference.
Over a decade we accept a lot of changes as our own which we wouldn’t have found acceptable earlier.
Yet, if we are asked how much we are going to change in the coming 10 years, we will say not much. Why do we underestimate the future ?
So also our relationships, our definition of success will reshape over years without even our conscious awareness.
