[ The story reflects the class barrier and the glass ceiling between the babus of Indian railways, a legacy of babudom inherited from its colonial roots.]
Once DRM’s Briefcase, Sr Dom‘s Briefcase and AOM‘s Briefcase were going to the accident site together. The AOM’s briefcase was sitting next to the DRM’s.
This annoyed the DRM’s Briefcase. He shouted at the AOM’s briefcase,
” How dare you touch me with your filthy fingers ? You are a mere junior scale briefcase. Don’t you know the protocol ?”
…
Then a staff came and logged all the 3 briefcases on his back and carried them together to the Rest house.
Unfortunately, the staff was not even an officer. He was a mere Group D staff.
Note:-
The functional unit of indian Railways is called a Division. it is headed by the Divisional Railway Manager, ( DRM in short) who is a Senior Administrative Grade officer of Government of India. He is assisted by Divisional Operating Managers ( DOM) ( AOM is Assistant DOM ). These officers control the movement of the 22593 operating trains and enjoy privileges as per their posts.
Indian Railways employs 1.25 million employees who range from Group A officers like DRM, DOM to the unskilled Group D staffs at the bottom. It is also known for its feudal class system among its million staff and the huge gap between these artificially separated groups.
