A Virus that made us humane.

Not all viruses are bad.
The placenta that joins a baby with her mother is the gift of a virus HERV-W.

HERV-W, the Maya Danav ( ମୟ ଦାନବ ) of humans.

Some viruses insert their genetic information into our DNA. When the host cells divide, these viruses are carried on to our daughter cells. One such virus is the HERV-W that got incorporated into us mammals 150 million years ago.

This changed us the mammals since then. Because this virus has an unique asset. It can build a special filter for humans called a placenta to which foetuses can hang free and safe.

The Maternal Bonding:

We mammals are different.

Out of all living beings, we mammals are a minuscule number that go on feeding their babies from their breasts long after they are separated from our body. This develops the special mother to baby bonding that stands us out. After the babies are born we mammals carry them along on our breast. Snakes and frogs don’t. The bonding there is less. the baby reptiles must escape their parents as soon as possible lest they became their diet. Snakes eat their babies.

The Placental Advantage:

Placenta is the most magnificent acquisition of higher mammals.

The technology used by Placenta is unique. Two different lives are joined by this selectively permeable valve system. Blood cannot cross this membrane. But glucose and nutrition from the mother can pass on to the baby and nourish them. Gases and toxins from the baby can cross back to the mother who detox them.

It seems this virus- architect has created a specially empowered Border Security force which actively controls the traffic between mother and the fetus as per the demand generated from time to time.

When a pregnant mother gets the hepatitis virus, her placenta simply doesn’t allow the virus to get filtered into the baby. Viruses are small enough to pass through every filter but not the placenta.

“Please, no harm to the baby. I’m representing the interest of the unborn baby on behalf of my client.

Now, who may be the client ?

“The Father”

Yes, placenta represents the father element in the mother’s womb. It keeps the baby alive at the cost of mother.

If the placenta is healthy, be assured the baby will be.

R K MAHAPATRA

Placenta is a recent acquisition of higher mammals. 150 million years. The primitive mammals of Australia like Opossums, Koalas and Kangaroos don’t have placenta. They can’t nurture their babies inside their womb till the baby is fully fit. Instead they deliver a premature baby and carry them in a special pouch attached to their underbelly. They are called Marsupials.

Marsupials don’t have this marvelous technology: the Placenta.

Because of this technology, a human mother can nurture the baby inside her womb for 9 long months. Snakes do not have them. They produce kids in hundreds. Half of which is eaten by the mother herself.

The unique parental bonding of a mother and her child is the gift of the placenta. This uniquely social animal called humans is the gift of a virus HERV-W.

Otherwise, there would have been no humanity, but another animal.

Here is the thing:

In the animal kingdom, a father and a mother is needed to create a baby. In this joint venture, the genetic investment of both the partners is equal. But unlike fishes and reptiles, a Sapien Mother is bound to carry the baby in her womb for 9 months and suckles the baby on her breast for one more year. She is also debarred from entering into further agreement with any other male till the baby is safe while the male is free to start business anywhere else. No restrictions imposed. This is an unequal treaty.

In this business agreement, nature blocks the mother from conceiving during this period ( Lock-in status) while the father can go on investing every where else and procreate without any restriction.

Conflict of Interest:

In this joint venture between the father and the mother, when a male animal is permanently kept out of the business by design, who represents the father and looks after his interest inside a mother’s womb?

Ans: Inside the mother’s womb, Placenta looks after the baby in the absence of the father.
