VACCINE INEQUALITY

Only 1.6% of people of Low Income Countries have received at least One dose.
US has used up 372 million doses to vaccinate 61% of its citizens at least one dose and will start the booster dose from September.
Israel has started 3rd (booster) dose for all citizens above 30.

Breakthrough cases -Report

(Any person who gets a Covid-19 infection after getting the full course of vaccines is known as a Breakthrough case.)

A study on breakthrough infection among the health care workers of University of California San Diego Health ( UCSDH) is published on 2nd September 2021 in the NEJM.

It studies the month wise breakthrough infection among all staff vaccinated between Jan to march. The data for the July attack rate per 1000 is given below

Delta variant accounted for 95% of cases after April 2021
There is a slight decrease in protection after 4th month of completion of vaccination.
The dramatic change in vaccine effectiveness from June to July may be due to waning immunity and emergence of the Delta variant.
If waning of immunity is substantiated, Booster dose will be required after 6- 8 month interval of second dose especially among the risk categories: elderly, HCW and FLW.

BREAKTHROUGH INFECTION IS LESS THAN 1 IN 1000, IT OCCURS MAINLY AMONG THE ELDERLY

There are some Covid admissions among the vaccinated, but it is less than 1 in 1000. Even among those who get serious or succumb due to Covid, 90% are in the elderly group with immunosuppression. They are not able to mount immunity even after vaccination. Vaccines are very effective among the healthy and normal peoples.
