Insulin Resistance explained.

You see, you can catch Diabetes, that too at a very younger age.

What I mean you can successfully and confidently acquire Diabetes. You don’t have to inherit it from your forefathers.

Some everyday life adjustment can initiate a cascade in our body – a lifestyle which doctors call Diabetes .

Your sugar consumption maybe as normal as me. Your insulin output is also same as me. Both of us are perfectly equal. Yet in this perfect pitch your insulin cannot bat out the little glucose there. Because a little known bowler called “Insulin resistance” runs through the innings of your life. You become diabetic while I am perfectly normal. While I can take my sweet dish without hesitation, you can’t. This is what doctors call Insulin Resistance.

Let me tell you who creates this little villain called ‘Insulin Resistance’ :-
1.Your stress levels,
2.Your sleep quality,
3.Your physical activity level,
4.Your exposure to environmental toxins.
Yes these simple everyday things create that little devil called Insulin Resistance (IR)

For example:
1. Any person can have stress such as work stress, emotional stress, and importantly what I call the ‘Perceived Stress’. Anyone could be a stressed person.
‘Stress perception’ can vary from person to person without them being aware of this. For me it’s just the chime of the door bell that can cause stress. And that raises levels of cortisol in my body and cortisol, when it’s up, raises my sugar which creates this Insulin Resistance. For you the annual target and deadlines via your smartphone may be enough to create your insulin resistance, IR. For him, merely the presence of his in laws , and for her, her son’s exam can give that perception. For a boy the target of ‘ you must get into the IIT like your cousin’ fries him in enough cortisol.

2. You can be sleep deprived because you are a shift worker. In some people, a simple one night sleep deprivation can give them as much IR as a six months on a junk food diet can.

3. You’re getting older, you’re losing your muscle mass. Your 9 to 5 sitting job also helps you getting your muscle mass replaced by fat. Your shoulder looks flabby. Face looses it’s sharpness. This skewed muscle to fat ratio can cause insulin resistance.

All these things, your job stress, sleep deprivation, flabby body are so universal in today’s job condition that nothing seems amiss. In fact
1. Missing strings of nights of sleep in today’s work jargon is macho.
2. Our result oriented society has been glorifying stress today like nothing. They say ‘No stress, no gains’. What a way to catch diabetes.
3. Getting a bit rounded at the waist line is the sign of prosperity today. Look at successful businessman, contented work bosses.
These are the very pitches which suit that little known bowler called Insulin Resistance to run through your life and create havoc.
And a perfectly normal person taking perfectly normal quantities of carbs but in the top position of a multinational company in Mumbai develops Diabetes at 30, while his elder brother in the village takes more carbohydrate, sleeps like log , wakes up early in the morning every day to plough the field and can still take the whole box of sweets comfortably. No they didn’t have Diabetes in family.
Today most often, Diabetes is not a family disease, but a curse of prosperity and the stress of getting there.

How to tackle this insulin resistance ?

Code 3

  • Losing weight
  • Regular exercise
  • Not skimping on sleep

Very simple. Right. These 3 batsmen can tackle the devil and help improve your insulin sensitivity.

( When I got my Diabetes at 38, I wondered why me? Why at all ? I have no family history, junk food etc. This is a sort of confession.. Coming to peace with my Diabetes. )

Thanks for your patient reading. Regards.
