Yes you have guessed right.
Our two nostrils are there to give us stereo smell effect.
Try to inhale the aroma of a steaming cup of coffee with first your left nostril closed and then the right. The difference will amaze you.
The speed of air flow is different from one nostril to the other.
Some smell molecules need to be perceived by fast airflow while some are better smelt with slow airflow.
Interestingly, both the nostrils alternate their air flow to give smell variation form nostril to nostril, and from person to person and time to time.
