Incas of Peru were a great civilization. In fact they were the greatest empire of the sixteenth century world. They had an army of 80,000.
In 1525, they had an unusual visitor. It was only a small group of Spanish explorer. But one of the Spaniard was infected with small pox.
This Spaniard infected the Incan society with the virus of smallpox.
Most Spaniards had some immunity to the disease, as Small Pox had already been present in Europe for many years. However, the indigenous American people had no such immunity, and the virus would eventually go on to kill 90 percent of the Incas.
Within a year, almost nothing remained of the 7,000-year-old civilization except the great Machu Picchu.
Seven years after the arrival of Small Pox, the Spanish Invaders arrived.
History records that the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro was able to conquer the Incan empire with only 168 men.
