The next batsman padded up and waiting

It was February 24, 1988.
– Azad Maidan, Bombay.
– Harris Shield semifinal.

The two boys from the Shardashram Vidyamandir just went on and on, in a scoring spree. When the stumps were drawn for the night, the two had piled up an unbeaten 664 runs. In the next 5 years they would be the toast for the whole nation. While Sachin Tendulkar scored his test century in 2 years, Vinod Kambli went on to score 224 runs in a test in 5 years.

But what happened to the boy who had padded up and waited throughout the now famous record innings ?

Nobody remembered him. Nobody remembers the man who spends his time on the bench waiting.

5 Years Later

It took the boy 5 more years to make his first class debut. And what a debut it was. He created a world record for highest score on debut by scoring 260 against Haryana. Still no one remembered him.

He went on to score 11,000 first class runs and had the record to be the second highest scorer in the Ranji trophy format. With 30 first class centuries and 60 half, He is considered among the finest middle-order batsmen never to have played for India.

Yet, nobody remembered him.

When you are playing for Bombay, no one has the time to remember the second highest run getter.

It took 30 more years.

Amol Muzumdar finally created his unique record — not with the bat, but as the coach who led India’s women to their maiden ODI World Cup triumph.

God sees the truth, but waits.
