Muhurtam
Example – Brahma Muhurtam. Abhijeet Muhurtam, YamaDanda, Shubha muhurta
The unit of measurement in Hora-shastra (Indian Astrology) is one Day ( includes Aho and Ratra both ). The word Hora occurs in the middle of Aho-Ratra. Aho is counted from sunrise to sunset and Ratra is from sunset to sunrise. Both are punctuated halfway by Madhyahna (noon) and Madhyaratri (midnight.)
Thus
One Month = 30 Days
One Day = 30 Muhurtam
One Sunrise to another sunrise takes 24 hours, Hence one muhurta counts to 24 hours/ 30 = 48 minutes.
One muhurta is further divided into two Danda or Ghadi and equals to 24 minutes.
Abhijeet Muhurta : 48 minutes with the noon as the centre.
It is supposed to be the most auspicious time of the day. It coincides with the madhyanha. That is 24 minutes before the midday and 24 minutes after that. Since the sunrise and sunset vary from day to day, so is the beginning and end of the Abhijeet Muhurta for each day.
Brahma Muhurta : 48 minutes before the Sunrise.
The muhurta immediately before the dedicated to Sun: Surya muhurta.
The Muhurta immediately prior to Suryamuhurta ( Sunrise – 1hour 36 min to 48 min) is called Brahma Muhurta. If the Sunrise on a particular day occurs at 6 am, then the Brahma Muhurta for that day is from 4.24 am to 5.12 am.
Sandhi Kshana
( Those 48 minutes)
( These 48 mins are called Sandhi khan or period of transit, when Devi attains the Karala form of the most destructive Chamunda.)
In Indian Astrology, a muhurta counts to 48 min.
In Hora-Shastra one Aho starts from Sunrise to Sunset and Ratra start from Sunset to Sunrise. This counts to 24 hours. Each ahoratra is divided into 30 muhurtam. Thus each muhurta approximates to 24 hours/ 30 = 48 minutes.
( NB: Hora word appears in the middle of Aho-Ratra. We have several important 48 minutes: Abhijeet Muhurta, Brahma Muhurtam and so on)
Sandhi Muhurtam
Sandhikshana is the muhurtam joining the Mahastami with Mahanabami.
24 mins before Ashtami ends to 24 mins after navami starts, is the time when Devi takes the form of the all destroying Chamunda form and would kill Chanda and Munda (the demons) and redeem all the life on the earth from their karala deed.
These 48 mins are regarded as the most auspiscious moment in the 9 days of Navratri.
..
As per Devimahatmya, Devi embodies extreme destructive powers transferred to her by all the gods in the heaven. Thus, in this Muhurtam ( 48 minutes), all the divine energy of the universe are focused ( like a lens focuses sunbeam) to kill the demonic forces.
..
How to Count these 48 minutes ?
Each Tithi lasts for 24 hours and one muhurta 48 minutes .
For example, this year the Navami starts at 19.58 pm on the night of 22.10.23. Sandhikhan starts at 19.34 ( 24 min ahead in the Ashtami ) and continue untill 20.22 pm of 22.10.23,( 24 mins into Navami).

I wish all of us to get super charged up during the auspicious sandhiskana of this Navratri. May the Shakti lead us to the path of Jyoti.
