1. The Kal ka Chokra:
The evolution of human brain states that our thinking brain, the Prefrontal cortex (PFC) appeared only in the recent past. It’s the part that sits behind your EYEs.
2. The boojurg:
Deep down, between the two EARs sits the limbic system or the impulsive brain. It is millions of years old and was present in the Dinosaurs, the birds and all other animals.
If you are obese and there’s a plate of Rasagulla in front of you, the PFC whispers, ” No, don’t touch it. You are on a diet.”
Here the Limbic brain steps in, ” You’re only a ‘Kal ka Chokra’. Just shut up. People have been eating plates of these sweets and nothing happens to them.”
3. The third brain, the Thalamus, which sits right behind your NOSE decides, “although sweets are bad for our weight, as our boojurg with their years of wisdom advise, there’s no harm, if we’ll take only two. And I promise, this will be the last.”
…
Our impulses often take over because they are ingrained in us from millions of years. There’s only one way to empower our PFC over the Limbic brain.
The Meditation:
A slow and steady practice of mindful control can empower the PFC over the limbic system.
Till then you’ll always grab that sweet for the umpteenth last time.
